  • Condition: Has some dye transfer of the red into the lighter colored areas. I don't know if it became wet at one time or if the dye just kind of seeped into the adjoining fabric. Description

I am not an expert in Chinese textiles (though I wish I were).  I am just someone with an absolute love and appreciation of Chinese embroidery. I know enough to know that this is a very nice altar cloth.
In the center is a Peacock surrounded by Lions.  The lions are done with couched gold metal threads. There are also little mirrors stitched on. There are Peonies, Pine trees, butterflies as well as a weathered rock embroidered in the center part.  At the top are Mandarin ducks (a symbol of fidelity) as well as a bird in the center I can't identify.  There is so much symbolism in all the design choices.  You can almost "read" an embroidery like this as to its meaning.
It does have dye transfer of the red dye into the lighter areas.  Honestly for me I don't mind it.  It just makes it look its age.  The back is also stained.  The embroidery is in very good condition.  Even the metal threads that are couched to make the lions.  Those tend to fray first.
    Measures 38 by 39 inches.
